5. Self-doubt - "I’m not an expert, so no one will want to read what I write."

I can say this with confidence because I've been exactly where you are. I also dreamed about writing a book since the early 2000s, but I allowed these very myths to hold me back for over a decade.

The timing never seemed right. Whether I was engrossed in my studies, pursuing not one but four degrees, or working at esteemed legal and public accounting companies like Bowmans, Arthur Andersen, EY, Deloitte, and investment bank, Deutsche Bank, I always found a reason to delay my writing aspirations. I definitely struggled to convince myself it was the perfect time when I had the incredible opportunity to work at Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle.

But one day, during my nearly eight-year tenure there, something inside me clicked. I realized the perfect time would never come unless I made it happen. I took a leap of faith and dove headfirst into the process, fully aware that the only way to uncover the path ahead was to start walking it.

I also discovered that despite the countless books already written on my chosen topic, I had a unique story to tell simply because I am an individual with my own experiences and perspectives. I realized that my voice mattered, and no matter how many books existed on a subject, there was always room for my unique perspective to be heard.

As time constraints made it challenging for me to write my own story, I sought help in bringing my story to life. It wasn’t easy, given the demands of my super hectic work and personal life, but I persevered. Finally, in 2019, I achieved my dream and officially became an author!

Following that milestone, I started writing articles on topics that sparked my interest. One of these articles, which proposed reforms to the criminal justice system for greater equity in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, gained visibility online when it was shared by a former colleague and friend. It was ultimately featured on Amazon's global websites, shared by tax leadership with all my colleagues, and featured in the Financial Mail, leading to increased exposure and sales of my first book. And guess what? I’m not even a criminal law expert – I said this right in the article! But this goes to show that passion and a fresh perspective can make a real impact, no matter your formal expertise.

In 2022, I published my second book, a novel that delves into the captivating world of the gaming tech industry (Rookie (mybook.link)).

If I could overcome these excuses and turn my aspirations into reality, so can you. It’s time to believe in yourself and take that leap of faith.
