Republican Senators Unveil “Justice Act”


 

Senator Tim Scott, who maintains that he has been pulled over by the police “seven times in a single year”, introduced the ‘‘Just and Unifying Solutions To Invigorate Communities Everywhere Act of 2020’’ / “Justice Act” as the Republicans’ legislative response to George Floyd’s death on June 17, 2020.

The Act essentially aims to: 

- Require “no knock warrant“ reporting;

- Incentivize end of practice of chokeholds by linking a ban to federal law enforcement grants;

- Require ”use of force” reporting and reporting on when an officer discharges weapon;

- Impose new penalties for not using body cameras; 

- Make lynching a federal crime; 

- Provide law enforcement with funding to strengthen de-escalation of force and duty to intervene training;
- Establish a commission to issue a report on conditions affecting black men and boys; and

- Establish a commission to review criminal justice system and make recommendations on best practices.
